Common Summer HVAC Problems and How to Avoid Them

local residential HVAC service - H & H Heating And Air Conditioning Inc. - EssingtonIf you’re like most people, you’re probably spending your summer weekends attending barbecues, splashing in the pool, and relaxing on your patio or porch. Truly, those are some of the best parts of summer, but they’ll be far more enjoyable if you’re not also worrying about your HVAC system.

It’s not uncommon for homeowners to encounter struggles with their HVAC systems during the summer. After all, this is one of the seasons during which your HVAC equipment works the hardest! Luckily, most common summer HVAC problems are not that hard to deal with if you know what to do.

Problem: Water Around Your Air Conditioner

If there is water around your indoor AC unit, that usually means your condensate drain tube is blocked. This is usually a problem you can fix on your own if you are fairly handy. Locate the drain tube, which is a flexible, clear, rubberized piece of tubing. If you can see a blockage in the tube, use a long pipe cleaner or brush to clear it out. This should get things flowing again. You could also simply replace the drainage tube. It should disconnect easily if you just pull on it, and you can simply push a new piece of tubing into place. If you are uncertain, it’s always safer to let a professional handle this.

Problem: Your Home Is Still Too Humid

If the AC has been working hard but your home is still too humid, you may need a dehumidifier. Your local residential HVAC service company can assess your needs and recommend a unit. A dehumidifier will reduce the burden on your air conditioner, so it may last longer and need fewer repairs. You should also have fewer issues with mold growth and excessive moisture, going forward.

Problem: Your Evaporator Coil Is Frozen

Your evaporator coil is not meant to be covered in ice. This usually means airflow has been restricted in some way. If there are plants growing near the coil, trim them back. If your filter is clogged or dirty, make sure you change it. Usually, if you do those two things, your coil will thaw. If it does not, then you should call an HVAC company to come fix your AC unit. There may be a refrigerant leak that needs to be addressed.

Problem: Your AC Is Running Constantly

Your air conditioner should turn on and off a few times per hour. If it is running constantly, that might mean one of two things. First, you may have turned your thermostat from “auto” to “on,” which will cause the central fan to run constantly. Turn it back to “auto” to save money. If that does not work, your AC may have a refrigerant leak or a faulty sensor, both of which can be fixed by a 24-hour AC repair company.

With proper air conditioner maintenance, you should have far fewer problems with your system. If you’re in need of HVAC repairs or replacement this summer, don’t hesitate to contact H & H.
