How to Prepare Your HVAC System for a Heatwave

local HVAC contractors - H & H Heating And Air Conditioning Inc. - EssingtonSummer in the northeast now means facing more and more heat waves and temperatures soaring higher and higher. When the thermometer soars, you want to be confident your HVAC system is ready to take on the challenge. After all, there is nothing more refreshing than stepping into an air-conditioned home after you’ve been out in the heat and humidity. So, how do you make sure your AC system is ready to take on the heat wave? Our local HVAC contractors have a few suggestions.

Change Your Air Filter

When was the last time you changed your air filter? If it has been more than three months, then it’s time to head to the hardware store and buy a new filter. Your AC filter removes dust, mold spores, pollen granules, and other debris from the air. But as this debris accumulates on the filter, it becomes harder and harder for your air conditioner to push air through the filter. When a heat wave comes on, you don’t want your AC to face the extra challenge presented by a clogged filter. So, slide a fresh one in place to take the burden off the system, which will allow your system to cool more effectively.

Check the Condensate Drain Line

In the Delaware Valley, a heat wave often comes with high humidity. This means your air conditioner will be removing a lot of moisture from your indoor air. That moisture should be sent down the condensate drain line and into a sink or drain. If the condensate drain line is blocked, you could instead end up with a big puddle on your floor.

To check your drain line, first you need to locate it. It’s usually made from clear, flexible tubing, and it should run from your AC unit to a drain. If there is any grime, such as algae or mold, in the line, you can use a long pipe cleaner to clear it out. That said, unless you are fairly handy, an AC repair and service contractor is the best person to handle this task. If needed, they can also replace the line.

Start Cooling Your Home Early

Sometimes homeowners figure they’ll save money by only cooling their home on the hottest of days. The problem with this strategy is that when the heat wave hits, it can take forever to cool your home down. This is hard on your AC and will result in a lot of extra energy consumption. It’s better to start bringing your home down a few degrees before a heat wave. That way, your AC will only need to do a little extra work to maintain your indoor temperature when the outside temperature starts climbing.

Nobody’s too happy when the temperature soars, but with the proper preparation, you can ensure your HVAC system performs well during the next heat wave. Don’t hesitate to contact H & H Heating & Air Conditioning if you need indoor air quality services, air conditioner replacement, or any other help.
