There are changes coming to the world of HVAC. Recently, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, or EPA, initiated a mandate related to the use of refrigerants in residential HVAC equipment. This mandate will go into effect on January 1, 2025.
If you’re a homeowner in Pennsylvania or New Jersey, you probably have some questions about this mandate and how it will affect you. As a local HVAC company, we’re happy to offer some answers – and hopefully a little reassurance.
Overall, the 2025 HVAC Mandate calls for the phase-out of a refrigerant that is commonly used in today’s air conditioners. This refrigerant, known as R-410A, was previously released as a more eco-friendly alternative to previous refrigerants. However, the industry has since made additional improvements, and there are now even more eco-friendly refrigerants available – ones with even less global impact than R-410A. As such, the 2025 Mandate seeks to phase R-410A out in favor of these other refrigerants, which are called R-454B and R-32.
No. If you currently have an air conditioner that runs R-410A, you do not have to get rid of it. You can keep it until the end of its serviceable life. However, HVAC contractors cannot sell or install air conditioners that run R-410A after January 1, 2025. So, if you need to replace your air conditioner after this date, you’ll have to choose one that uses a different refrigerant.
Yes. If you have an air conditioner that uses R-410A and it needs repairs, an HVAC system repair company can still repair it. Refrigerant for these units will still be available for some time. However, it will be slowly phased out in the coming years, and it will become more expensive over time.
What this means is that eventually, having an R-410A air conditioner repaired may cost more than replacing it with a new air conditioner. That’s unlikely to be the case in 2025, or even in 2026, but it may be true a few years down the road. Don’t worry: your HVAC system replacement company can always give you quotes for both repairs and replacement, allowing you to make the most financially sound decision.
While this mandate does present some short-term challenges for both homeowners and HVAC companies, it should have positive results in the long term. These newer refrigerants, R-454B and R-32, have a 78% lower global warming potential than their predecessors. They also allow for the creation of more energy-efficient units, which will help keep your utility bills in check.
Hopefully, this explanation has eased your concerns about the 2025 EPA Mandate and has also clarified what you do and do not need to do as a homeowner.
